Tailgating On The Drillfield
100
Why don't we use the largest patch of grass at Tech for tailgating before football games? Many other schools use their large central green spaces for tailgating and it has become a strong part of their school traditions. There are plenty of parking spots around the Drillfield, and I am sure many alumni and students would love to have a chance to tailgate in the middle of campus.

Let's start a new tradition for Hokie football, and make our game day atmosphere even better.

I understand that having the ability to tailgate on the drill field would be sublime but you really need to take into the consideration the accessibility of it by car and the amount of trash that is normally accumulated by tailgaters. The reason why the drillfield is so pleasing to the eye is because event planning really cracks down on individuals driving vehicles out on the drillfield. If people were to park and tailgate, tire marks and brown patches of grass would most likely accumulate (especially when we have consecutive weekend games.)

Also, on the residential side of campus, there's Main Campbell, East Campbell, and the Egglestons which are in very close proximity of the drillfield. Some students may feel as though the tailgaters on the drillfield will be encroaching on their living space. Granted, you might argue that students still pass under the archways and quad areas beside these halls on their way to class, but tailgating usually insinuates the presence of alcohol, litter, and possibly loud and reckless behavior.

You do hold a valid point that it would be a great way to bring hokies closer together, but allowing tailgating on the drillfield may pose potential problems for on campus residents and affect the drillfield's manicured landscape. I know that IMPACT has conducted several "Sober is Sexy" events and tailgates across campus this semester at Cranwell, GBJ, and a few residential quads.

To clarify, I think that there is ample parking around the Drillfield, on the actual road (Drillfield Drive). I don't think there would be a need to park cars on the grass. You brought up some good points though, I hope there is a way this could work out in the future.

I like this idea. I think we should consider tailgating on the drillfield. not parking cars on the drillfield, but setting up tents all around. we can model the grove at ole miss - check it out. it can be our "grove"
